It has been ages since I last drew a cartoon. I stopped drawing cartoons partially because I was busy, partially because my son broke my Wacom Tablet pen that I use to draw my cartoons, but the biggest reason I quit drawing cartoons was because I was too lazy.

A recent Twitter phenomenon of posting dialogue of people’s responses to what you do for a living inspired this cartoon. I drew this cartoon using my Microsoft Surface with a program called Clip Studio Paint Pro. I had been using Adobe Illustrator on my Mac, but I wanted to give this program a shot.

The cartoon is fairly primitive as I am still learning how to use the software. I anticipate that as I get more familiar with the program, the quality of future cartoons will improve. That’s assuming that I get over my laziness and find time to make some more cartoons in the future.

Here is my latest version the Physician Specialty Pain Scale which is based off of the Medscape Physician Compensation Report 2018. If you are not familiar with this yearly report, it is a compilation of over 20,000 physicians in 29 specialties that includes information such as salary and hours worked.

In the past I used data from the “Overall career satisfaction” page but that was not included in this year’s report so this year’s Physician Pain Scale uses data from the “I would choose the same specialty” page found in the report. From the physicians that responded, orthopedists, plastic surgeons, and radiologists led all physicians in “re-choosing” their specialty. At the bottom of the pack for “re-choosing” the same specialty are rheumatology, public health/preventative medicine, and nephrology.

Check out my past Physician Specialty Pain Scales here: 20112012, and 2015. Also check out my work featured on KevinMD

I made this cartoon back in 2011 when it seemed like every Marvel Comic Book Hero was getting their own movie and the guys at Marvel were gearing up for the first Avengers movie. I was so excited for that Avengers movie back then. I can’t believe that 7 years later, I have my tickets and I am just as excited to watch the third installment of Marvel’s Avengers on opening weekend.

I know, I’m a geek.

I created this cartoon to pay homage to all those superheroes and monsters out there who credit their powers to radiation.

The “July Effect” is the perceived phenomenon of increased medical errors, medical costs, and patient deaths seen in teaching hospitals during the month of July which also happens to be the time when new graduates from medical school begin their residencies as brand new medical doctors.

So is this a real phenomenon?

Real or not, one thing I do know is it is super stressful that first month starting off as a brand new medical student on clinical rotations, or as a new resident in the hospital, or as a new attending overseeing residents. If you are a new medical student or resident, check out my post on gear that can improve your stressful life.

In a study published by the Journal of American Board of Family Medicine entitled, The “July Effect”: A Look at July Medical Admissions in Teaching Hospitals, the authors “examined the effect of admission for myocardial infarction, heart failure, or pneumonia during the first academic quarter compared with all other quarters in teaching versus non-teaching hospitals on length of stay, cost, and mortality.

The study suggests small increases in mortality among patients admitted with myocardial infarction in the first academic quarter compared with all other quarters in teaching versus nonteaching hospitals. Increased cost and longer stay were seen for those admitted with heart failure.”

Radiologist Cartoon https://poormd.com/radiologist-cartoon/ Tue, 01 Dec 2020 16:44:03 +0000 http://poormd.com/?p=543 These fitness gadgets seem to be all the rage. But as a sedentary radiologist who sits in front of a computer all day, I find them depressing.

At least my wife likes them and says they have given her some positive results:

I hated studying history as a kid. Now, I love studying history. I thoroughly enjoy listening to books on history and historical fiction novels which inspire me to dig deeper into historical subjects.

From all my studies in history, I have learned that while history does not repeat itself, human nature does and how humans and civilizations respond to situations will repeat.

There is the saying, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

More appropriately, I think the saying should go, “Those who learn from history are doomed to watch others repeat it.”

This doctor cartoon was inspired by and dedicated to Dr. Frank Netter and his legendary artwork in the Atlas of Human Anatomy. This text should be the go to text for any anatomy course. I love Dr. Netter’s artwork and spent many hours studying it during medical school. At one point I was very interested in learning how to do medical illustrations but I eventually settled on making cartoons.

Ugh. First world problems.

This cartoon was inspired by the popular children’s nursery rhyme about Humpty Dumpty who is portrayed as an egg and the fact that our heads are shaped like eggs on axial CT images. So naturally, I put the two together and made this cartoon. This cartoon also shows how reliant many specialties are on medical imaging when making medical decisions. In this case, all the doctors could not put Humpty together until the CT was performed and the radiologist had read the report and called in the results.

I love that my kids love to play the same Mario that I played when I was a kid. While the graphics and game play are much improved, the DNA is the same as Mario jumps on Goombas, bust bricks with his head, and consumes mushrooms to grow bigger. This got me wondering, what kind of toll jumping head first into all those brick blocks and consuming all those magical mushrooms was doing.
